In a delightful twist of fate, Cher's latest holiday tune, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” has vaulted her back onto the pop music radar. According to Billboard, this festive number has debuted at #40 on the Pop Airplay chart, a list determined by airplay across over 150 pop radio stations. This marks Cher's first appearance on this chart since March 2002 with “Song for the Lonely,” bridging a significant gap of nearly 22 years.
While this gap is noteworthy, it's not a record-breaker in the pop world. Elton John experienced an even longer hiatus of over 23 years, ending with his Dua Lipa collaboration “Cold Heart” charting in 2021 on the Pop Airplay chart.
However, “DJ Play a Christmas Song” isn't just a modest comeback. It has soared to #1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, becoming Cher's first leader there since her 1989 hit “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Additionally, the song has conquered the top spot on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales and Holiday Digital Song Sales charts. This achievement cements Cher's extraordinary legacy, having secured a #1 hit on at least one Billboard chart in every decade since the 1960s.
Cher's excitement and gratitude towards her fans are palpable on social media. She recently took to Instagram to share a roundup of her activities over the past month, including her chart successes and television appearances, accompanied by a heartfelt message to her fans: “Btw, I love you guys.”
Cher's holiday hit marks a significant moment in her illustrious career, proving that her musical appeal continues to resonate across generations and genres, especially during the festive season.
